Have you ask yourself ‘who I am in Christ’ and still questioned your value?

Your worth?

Your purpose?

What about God?

Have you ever doubted Him?

Maybe you’ve doubted His promises. Or His goodness. Or who He says you are.

If any of these thoughts have crossed your mind, welcome to the club.

It’d probably sound more impressive if I told you that this is an elite club with just a few select members. But I’m afraid nothing could be further from the truth.

You see, generations of women have struggled with issues of worth and identity at some point in their lives.

‘Who am I?’

‘Where do I fit in?’

And in true ‘beauty and the beast’ fashion, it’s a tale as old as time.

It all started with four little words.

Words whispered low that changed the course of history forever.

And as the Serpent drew closer, the seeds of doubt settled deep down in Eve’s very soul.

It’s a story that many of us are familiar with and you can read about it in Genesis 2-3.

 ‘Did God really say…?’

With those four words doubt became our close companion.

And with doubt came the lies.

  • Lies that diminish our identity.
  • Lies that question our worth.
  • Lies that suggest God can’t be trusted.

I know you will believe me when I say that the Father of Lies is still up to his old tricks. Because I have a feeling that, like me, you’ve fallen for some of his lies too.

What lies have you believed, my friend?

What doubts have been plaguing you?

What if we decide to tackle some of them together?

To do so, we have to start by identifying the lies because the Truth about who I am in Christ is at stake.

To remember who I am in Christ I must…

1. Identify the Lie

Of course, we know that there are lies that we’ve been told by others. Yet, as much as they hurt, there’s another type of lie that cuts even deeper. Those are the lies we’ve told ourselves. Or maybe, more accurately, the lies we’ve accepted as truth.

You know the ones.

The lies that say…

  • I’m not good enough
  • I’ll never get over this pain/heartache/struggle
  • My life isn’t’ going anywhere
  • And so on…

What lie have you believed deep in your heart? Write it down. Speak it out loud. Examine it. Put it on trial.

Where did this lie come from?

Often, these lies are so deeply rooted that we don’t see them for ourselves and you may need to ask a trusted friend for some input.

To remember who I am in Christ I must…

2. Expose the Liar

While it’s tempting to blame others for the lies we’ve clung to, it’s best to dig deeper. The truth is, all lies originate with the Father of Lies. If anything, he’s the one to blame.

Recognizing this truth will help us move toward forgiveness and reconciliation. Yes, even forgiving ourselves.

To remember who I am in Christ I must…

3. Cling to the Truth

If we were to simply throw away the lies, that wouldn’t be enough.

Just think of the story of the impure spirit in Matthew 12.

When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.

Matthew 12:43-45

Had the house been occupied, the impure spirit wouldn’t have been able to take up residency again, let alone bring his evil friends.

Similarly, throwing out that old lie is just the first step. We must take it a step further and replace it with Truth. Filling our hearts with Truth from God’s word will make it harder for other lies to move in.

Make it a daily practice to replace those lies that try to burrow themselves deep in your heart.

Here are some Truths to replace some of the most common lies we believe. Which one of these do you need to cling to today?

For the lie that says, ‘I am a failure’, replace it with:

I am a conqueror.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Romans 8:37 ESV

For the lie that says, ‘I’m nothing compared to others’, replace it with:

I am complete.

And because you belong to Christ you are complete, having everything you need.

Colossians 2:10 ERV

For the lie that says, ‘I am unlovable, no one loves me’. Replace it with:

I am loved.

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

1 John 4:10 NIV

I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.

Jeremiah 31:3 NIV

For the lie that says, ‘I just can’t win’, replace it with:

I am victorious.

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:57 ESV

Friend, I don’t know about you, but I have to repeat these truths to myself over and over again. Those sneaky lies will try to worm their way back, but I’m hiding God’s truth in my heart so that they have no place.

And the truth is that who I am in Christ has nothing to do with the lies the enemy whispers to me.

So, let us decide today to identify the lie, expose the liar and cling to the Truth.

And, as always, we’d love to hear from you.

  • What lies have you believed for so long?
  • Are you ready to kick them to the curb?
  • What Truth are you clinging to?

If there’s a Bible passage that’s speaking Truth to your heart, please share it in the comments to encourage someone reading this.

Together we will reclaim our God-given identity and be deeply rooted in God’s Word.

  1. This is awesome! I have dealt with many lies from the enemy that try to tell me that I am not enough, but I have been trying to replace that with the truth, that in Christ I am enough. He makes me enough! My daughter has also been attacked by the father of lies, and I have told her to get angry at him instead of herself. This post was exactly what I needed today. Thank you so much for sharing!

    1. Angela, I’m so very happy that these words spoke Truth to you today. The enemy wants us to believe he has power but we know that Jesus has already won that battle!
Blessings to you and your daughter as you embrace God’s Truth.
