I can’t say that I hear the topic of spiritual disciplines coming up in everyday conversations, yet many will agree that the practice of spiritual discipline is foundational to the Christian faith.
By ‘spiritual disciplines’ I mean those activities and practices that promote growth in us as Christians. And while you might go in search of a handy list of spiritual disciplines, you might be surprised to learn that you won’t find one in the Bible.
Sure, the concept of spiritual disciplines is steeped in the Word, but it’s not a term you’ll find there.
You might be wondering, if they’re so key how can we know what these disciplines are?
The truth is, there’s no definitive list of spiritual disciplines, but there are three basic disciplines that will serve you well as a Christian. These three are foundational to the Christian faith — mine and yours.
Build Your Faith on These Three Spiritual Disciplines
Spiritual Discipline #1 – The Study of God’s Word
I like to think of the Bible as God’s love letter to us, and what better way to feel loved than to read the words God penned for His children.
Rather than think of our time in the Word as a obligation, we can view it as a privilege to get a glimpse into God’s heart for His children.
If you feel stuck or don’t know where to start consider reading the book of John which captures the life of Jesus on the go, or the Psalms, which is chock full of encouragement for our daily lives.
And since we think of spiritual disciplines in terms of growth, know that when we dig deeper into God’s Word it serves to grow our faith.
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
Romans 10:17
Spiritual Discipline #2 – Prayer
If the Bible is God’s love letter to us, prayer is our response to Him.
Prayer need not be complicated or difficult. Just think of it as simply sharing what’s on your heart with a God who longs to hear from you.
The more you pray, the more you will learn how to pray. And when in doubt, do like Jesus’ disciples did and ask God to teach you how to pray.
Spiritual Discipline #3 – Making Disciples
When we study God’s Word and spend time with Him in prayer, we are bound to be transformed from the inside out. And guess what happens? We get excited to tell others about what God has done is our lives. That’s ultimately what making disciples is all about.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that making disciples is just for the pastor or more seasoned Christians. Whatever you know, have learned or gained from Christ, you can share with someone else.
Making disciples is so important that it was the focus of Jesus’ parting words to the disciples and a lasting commandment for those of us who would follow Him.
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20
So, there you have it, friends. Three spiritual disciplines on which to build your faith:
- 1) studying God’s Word,
- 2) prayer, and
- 3) making disciples.
Leave us a comment and let us know how you incorporate these disciplines in your daily walk. We always love hearing from you.
